LOGIC-trial // Welcome

Long-term effects of lifestyle intervention in Obesity and Genetic Influence in Children

The aim of the LOGIC trial (Long-term effects of Lifestyle intervention and Genetic Influence in Children) is to investigate the short-, middle-, and long-term associations between body weight (loss) and polymorphisms of adiposity relevant genes, cardio-metabolic parameters, lifestyle and quality of life. The trial runs since January 2006 and so far involves approximately 900 children. The aim is to recruit 1500 children by 2013.

Participants are 8 to 19 year old overweight and obese children and adolescents, who start a standardized in-patient weight loss therapy that focuses on a calorie restricted diet, adequate physical activity and behavior therapy at the rehabilitation center Klinik Schönsicht, Berchtesgaden, Germany.

The study is separated into two main parts:

In-patient therapy

Participants are recruited on their arrival day at the rehabilitation center (). Blood samples and anthropometrical measurements are taken and questionnaires on physical activity, dietary intake and/or quality of life are completed at the beginning and the end of the therapy, i.e. after 4 to 6 weeks.

Follow-up measurements take place 6 months, 1y, 2 y, 5 y and 10y after the in-patient therapy. Participants once more complete the study questionnaires sent by post and visit their general practitioner for examination of anthropometry, blood pressure and Tanner status. At the 5y and 10y follow-up we aim to assess blood parameters again.

Control group

We are currently recruiting 8 to 19-year old athletes who undertake a sport medical check-up at our institute. They will serve as a control group.
